Where these come from. Google Maps results for “medical school in {city}” across 40 US cities, collected 1 September 2026, signed out. Re-measured quarterly. Full method and findings.

Why it drifts

The profile is edited by people who do not report to you

Google accepts edits from users, from data partners and from anyone who claims a correction. Hours change, categories get swapped, a service area quietly narrows, and nobody in the business did any of it.

61% of ranking listings in this category are claimed, so an unclaimed or unmonitored profile is a genuine outlier rather than a normal state of affairs.

At one location you notice. Across forty you do not, and the first sign is a location whose calls dropped last month for no reason anyone can name.

The work

Fields, and the governance around them

Primary category first, because it is the single field with the largest effect and the one most often set once and never revisited. For medical schools the dominant choice is clear from the data, and switching away from it needs a reason better than a hunch about intent.

Then the fields customers actually filter on: hours including holiday hours, attributes, services, the booking link and the phone number that reaches a human.

Then monitoring, so a reverted edit raises an alert instead of sitting there for a quarter.

What is included

GBP management for a medical school group

What the engagement actually contains, and what each part is measured against.

IncludedWhat it means in practice
Field-level change logEvery edit recorded with who made it and whether it stuck, so a reverted category change is visible the same week rather than the next quarter.
Third-party edit monitoringGoogle accepts corrections from users and data partners. We watch for them and revert what is wrong.
Category governanceOne documented primary category per location type, applied identically across the group, with exceptions recorded rather than improvised.
Photo and post cadenceEnough to keep the profile active, sequenced so it does not become a job nobody has time for by month three.
Reported against the benchmarkEvery metric shown next to the measured figure for medical schools, so a number is always "against what" rather than floating on its own.
Per location, never per groupA group average hides your weakest site. Everything is reported per location first and rolled up second.
Getting there

The first ninety days

1. Inventory what is actually set

Every field on every profile, exported and compared. This alone usually finds two or three locations nobody had claimed.

2. Settle the category policy

One documented primary category per location type, applied across the group, with exceptions written down rather than improvised by whoever edited last.

3. Fill the fields customers filter on

Hours including holidays, attributes, services, booking link, and a phone number that reaches a person.

4. Turn on change monitoring

So the next third-party edit raises an alert in a day instead of sitting there for a quarter.

Questions

Common questions

How many Google reviews do medical schools need?

The median ranking listing carries 29, with the middle half between 5 and 125. That spread is the real answer: there is no single threshold. The full measurement, including how it differs by city size, is on the category page.

What star rating do we need to rank?

Lower than you have been told. 56% of ranking listings sit at 4.5 or above, which means one in two does not. Rating decides who clicks you, not whether you appear.

Why do our profile edits keep reverting?

Google accepts corrections from users, from data partners and from its own inference. An edit that keeps reverting is usually being contradicted by another source it trusts, and the fix is upstream rather than another edit.

Can we manage this in bulk?

Yes for most fields, and bulk is the only workable approach past about ten locations. The categories and service areas still need per-location judgement.
