Google Maps ranking is determined by the same three factors that Google uses for the Local Pack: relevance, distance, and prominence.
Relevance is how well your listing matches what the user is searching for. A business listed as a “Bathroom supply store” is more relevant for a search for “bathroom fittings dealer” than one listed as a “Hardware store.” Category selection, business description, services listed, and the content of your reviews all contribute to relevance signals.
Distance is how far your business is from the location associated with the search. When a user searches without specifying a location, Google uses their current location. When a location is specified, Google calculates distance from that point. You cannot change your distance from a searcher, but having an accurate pin location ensures no unnecessary distance disadvantage.
Prominence is how well-known and established your business appears to Google. This is influenced by your review count and rating, how many times your business appears in other online sources, whether your website has strong authority, and how complete and active your Business Profile is. A business with 150 reviews averaging 4.4 stars appears more prominent than one with 8 reviews averaging 4.0, even if both are the same distance from the searcher.
Unlike organic website SEO, there is no way to “pay for” higher Maps ranking. The Local Pack spots are organic results determined by these three factors. Google Ads can place a paid listing above the Local Pack but cannot directly influence your Maps ranking.
